4 Free Indoor Things to Do in Berlin in Winter

Whenever winter arrives in Berlin, I often hear the same question from friends who live here and from visitors:

"It's freezing outside, everything is grey and gloomy, and I don't feel like spending the whole day indoors at my hotel. Is there somewhere warm I can go, enjoy something interesting and, preferably, not spend a single euro?"

Well, that's a fair question!

Whether it's a coffee at a cosy café, a gin and tonic at a nice bar or a visit to a museum, a day out in Berlin can quickly become an expensive affair.

During the summer, things are much easier. The days are longer, the sun makes more frequent appearances and the city is full of free outdoor activities.

But winter is a different story.

So, as someone who has been living in Berlin since 2006, I've put together four great ideas for things you can do in Berlin during winter without spending a cent and without freezing outside!

1. Free Wednesday Lunch Concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie

Enjoy a Free Classical Music Concert at the Berlin Philharmonie

Here's a little tip that many visitors to Berlin don't know about: every Wednesday at 1 pm, you can enjoy a free classical music concert at the famous Berlin Philharmonie.

Between September and June, the Philharmonie opens its main foyer for a special lunchtime concert featuring talented musicians, chamber music, piano performances and occasionally some rather unusual musical combinations.

The concerts last around 40–50 minutes and offer a wonderful opportunity to experience one of Berlin's most impressive cultural venues without spending a euro.

A word of advice: these concerts are very popular, and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no reservations, so I recommend arriving at least 45 minutes early to secure your place.

Where: Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße 1, Berlin

When: Every Wednesday at 1 pm, September to June

Admission: Free

2. Visit the Reichstag Dome

Discover Berlin from Above at the Reichstag Dome

One of Berlin's most impressive landmarks is also one of its best free attractions.

The Reichstag Building, home to the German Parliament, is famous for its spectacular glass dome designed by architect Norman Foster. Visitors can walk up the spiral ramp inside the dome, enjoy panoramic views across Berlin and learn more about the German Parliament through an audio guide.

The experience is particularly beautiful on a winter day, when you can admire the city from the warmth of the enclosed glass structure.

The best part? Admission is completely free!

However, you must register in advance through the official Bundestag website. Bring a valid ID or passport, as security checks are required before entering.

Where: Platz der Republik 1, Berlin

Admission: Free

Important: Advance registration is required.

3. Discover Street Art at URBAN NATION

Explore Berlin's Street Art Scene at URBAN NATION

Berlin is famous for its street art, graffiti and alternative urban culture. But what if the weather is too cold to spend hours exploring the city's streets?

Head to URBAN NATION, a museum dedicated to urban contemporary art, street art and graffiti.

Located in the Schöneberg neighbourhood, this fascinating museum brings together works by artists from Berlin and around the world. You'll find colourful murals, creative installations and thought-provoking pieces that reflect the energy and diversity of contemporary urban culture.

It's a great way to discover another side of Berlin, especially if you're interested in art, creativity and the city's alternative scene.

And here's the best part: admission is free!

Where: Bülowstraße 7, 10783 Berlin

Admission: Free

Opening hours: Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 am–6 pm; Thursday to Sunday, noon–8 pm. Closed Mondays.

4. Visit the Tränenpalast – Palace of Tears

Families were being separated, and tears were flowing.

If you're interested in Berlin's history, this is a place you shouldn't miss.

The Tränenpalast, which translates as the "Palace of Tears", is a former border crossing at Friedrichstraße railway station. During the division of Germany, this was where people travelling from East Berlin to West Berlin said goodbye to friends and family. For many, these farewells were emotional and sometimes final.

Today, the building houses a permanent exhibition documenting everyday life in divided Germany, border controls, surveillance and the experiences of people living on both sides of the Berlin Wall.

It's a moving and fascinating place that helps visitors understand what life in a divided city really felt like.

The museum is free to visit and is an excellent choice for a cold or rainy winter day.

Where: Reichstagufer 17, 10117 Berlin

Admission: Free

Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday, 9 am–6 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10 am–6 pm. Closed Mondays.
